#421 Conferences, RIP Hunthausen, Japan - July 27, 2018
Democrats for Life of America Inaugural Annual Conference This well-attended event in Denver, July 20-22, which we co-sponsored, featured many of our endorsers as speakers: Rachel MacNair spoke about our campaign on Finding Alternatives to Planned Parenthood. Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa spoke for New Wave Feminists. Abby Johnson brought two former abortion clinic workers with her to speak for And Then There Were None, which provides services to people trying to get out of the abortion business. (Note: the Consistent Life Network is non-partisan, and we’d be just as delighted to speak at a Republican group, a Green Party group, the American Solidarity Party with whom we’ve co-sponsored events, and any other political party/group.)

Rehumanize Conference: October 12-14 Registration is now open for the annual Life/Peace/Justice conference of our member group Rehumanize International. It will be held in Pittsburgh. More details to come, but save the date on your calendars!
Rest in Peace: Raymond Hunthausen
Raymond Hunthausen, who was archbishop of the Seattle diocese (1975-1991) and the last remaining American to have attended the entire Second Vatican Council as a bishop, died on July 22 at the age of 96. He was one of our early endorsers. Announcing his death, Archbishop Sartain said Hunthausen wrote in 1980 “what is believed to be the first pastoral letter by an American bishop identifying steps the church should take to value the gifts of women equally with those of men.” He engaged in civil disobedience against the nuclear-armed Trident fleet, which he denounced as the “Auschwitz of Puget Sound.”

Quotation of the Week Joseph Bernardin, Roman Catholic Cardinal The Seamless Garment: Writings on the Consistent Ethic, p. 107 The logic of the consistent ethic is to press the moral meaning of both issues. The consequence of a consistent ethic is to bring under review the position of every group in the Church which sees the moral meaning in one place but not the other. The ethic cuts two ways, not one: it challenges pro-life groups and it challenges justice and peace groups. The meaning of a consistent ethic is to say in the Catholic community that our moral tradition calls us beyond the split so evident in the wider society between moral witness to life before and after birth.
