The Consistent Life Network has signed on as an organization to a letter encouraging support for U.S. House Resolution 77, sponsored by Back from the Brink, in support of the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This bill would provide for:

  • Actively pursuing and concluding negotiations on a new, bilateral nuclear arms control and disarmament framework agreement with the Russian Federation before 2026 and pursuing negotiations with China and other nuclear-armed states on an agreement or agreements for the verifiable, enforceable, and timebound elimination of global nuclear arsenals;

  • Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first;

  • Ending the President’s sole authority to launch a nuclear attack;

  • Taking the nuclear weapons of the United States off hair-trigger alert; and

  • Canceling the plan to replace the nuclear arsenal of the United States with modernized, enhanced weapons.

The deadline for signatures is March 3. We encourage our member groups and others to also sign.

Study: Pregnancy Help Centers vs. Nearby Abortion Facilities

Since the authors’ conclusion includes the idea that abortion facilities need to do better, as would be expected in the publication it’s in, this is no pro-life propaganda piece. Early pregnancy confirmation availability at crisis pregnancy centers and abortion facilities in the United States is published in the journal Contraception (January 2023, Pages 30-35). Researchers called centers to find out how quickly callers could get a pregnancy test, and what it would cost.

Results: 68.5 % of pregnancy help centers provided same-day appointments vs. 37.2% of abortion facilities, and 98% of the help centers were free, whereas only 16.6% of the abortion facilities were.

Particularly interesting was dividing up the pregnancy help centers into those in states where legislatures support them and those states where they don’t. Abortion facilities improved their wait times, compared to matched pregnancy help centers, in those states that are supportive of the help centers.

Our Latest Blog Post

Rachel MacNair recently got an email from a fellow Quaker claiming that sometimes keeping a woman from getting an abortion is more violent than the abortion. She pondered a response and said enough to make a full blog post: Isolating Women and Encouraging Jerks.

It looks at how, when pregnant women are put in difficult situations, abortion availability can help cause those situations. It also considers how the reasoning fits in with the just war theory vs. pacifism.

And listen to the rationale for taking their lives: They are poor! As if poverty should be an excuse for taking a human being's life! And you can walk through the garbage cans in America . . . and look at the food that's wasted . . .

And that to me is the grossest form of racism: to take the life of a Black child . . . I am two descendants removed from slavery.
