The 80th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki
This bombing was the last time nuclear weapons were deliberately used to kill people. Let us hope it forever remains the last time.
On Saturday, August 9, 10 am-12 pm Eastern Time, we’ll have our quarterly vigil against nuclear weapons. We will be combining our quarterly peace vigil with a special commemoration of the Nagasaki bombing. Art Laffin of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker has coordinated these commemorations in the past, and he and CLN’s John Whitehead are working together on planning this joint event. We’ll gather on the roadway in front of the White House. Contact John Whitehead, jwwhiteh@yahoo.com.
Meanwhile, World Beyond War is offering a Global Appeal to Nine Nuclear Governments that we’ve signed, and encourage other groups and individuals to sign. (World Beyond War, while not a member group, has participated in consistent-life conferences; it’s not to be confused with Win Without War, which is hostile to us.)
Planned Parenthood – The Defunding Decline Starts
Just recently, PP closed 5 building locations in California, one in Ohio, one in Indiana. They’ve announced two in Houston Texas will close September 30. All that’s on top of ones already this year, and is probably just a start. See the running tab. This is in anticipation of Medicaid funding cuts due to start October 1 – though a lower-court judge has blocked the cut in what even The Washington Post editorial board decries as judicial overreach. The appeals process is expected to overturn this.
This isn’t actually the start of the decline. It’s only the start of PP blaming it on the federal funding cuts.
Some media sources are passing along PP’s line that the centers most vulnerable to being cut are those in underserved areas. They don’t stop to consider: if there’s an actual concern about those who are underserved, why wouldn’t PP concentrate its remaining resources there?
Meanwhile, a July 23 press release announced that the Missouri Attorney General’s office has filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood for systemically misleading women about the risks of the abortion pill.
Sudan
CLN has signed the statement from Pax Christi International: The War on Women: A Statement on the Situation in Sudan, and we encourage other individuals and groups to also sign it.
They also sponsor webinars on the topic. You can find recordings of past ones and announcements of future ones here.
Pax Christi-USA is a member group of the Consistent Life Network.

Diaper Delivery
LoveLine, a ministry that assists women who are facing difficult situations with unplanned pregnancies and whose staff is mostly in Texas, spearheaded a diaper drive to assist flood victims in Texas. They personally delivered more than 54,000 diapers and 66,000 wipes to Kerrville, Texas on July 28, where more than 100 people were killed in recent flash floods. LoveLine is an affiliate of our member group And Then There Were None.

Quote of the Week
Pamela Paul, The Wall Street Journal, July 18, 2025
Planned Parenthood has been in financial trouble for years. According to one former executive, a little over a decade ago, it hired McKinsey to assess its healthcare operations; McKinsey concluded they were unsustainable. Many of its clinics are poorly maintained, understaffed and short on funding.
