August 8 Vigil for Hiroshima and Nagasaki Anniversaries
On August 8, the regular CLN quarterly vigil against nuclear weapons was held near the White House. It was coordinated with Art Laffin of CLN member group Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, who organizes commemorations around the Hiroshima and Nagasaki anniversaries each year. Art prepared a moving program for the event that included readings and songs. In addition, there were additional organizational sponsors beyond our usual ones, and the numbers participating (about 35) were greater than usual. Many passersby seemed moved by the vigil, and some joined it for a time. Two reporters covered the entire event, one of them from Japan.
The next quarterly vigil will be on November 14. For more information, contact John Whitehead.
Here are a couple of pictures and a short video clip.

Democrats' Wall of Bigotry against Pro-lifers Shows a Crack
News from our member group Democrats for Life: “After our outreach at the Texas Democratic Convention and our continued efforts to restore a pro-life Democratic caucus, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder responded with a clear message: ‘If your organization is interested in forming a caucus, then go for it.’”
They’re interested, and they’re going for it.
Planned Parenthood (PP) Closures
Three more PP centers, ones that did abortions, were closed in early August in Michigan (Lansing, Livonia, and Warren). This was expected. PP appealed to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for more emergency funding. The governor said she sympathized, but only the legislature could do that. It was out of the question that the legislature would, so the closures happened. For a running list of PP closures, see this page on our project website: Temporarily & Permanently Closed PP Centers.

That website matches PP centers to nearby Community Health Centers and other good alternative places to get medical care. This is to encourage women to get out of PP’s orbit for any of their health care needs, so that when they do get pregnant, they’re not in a place where abortion is pushed. Find the information for your own state:
PP now has just over 500 locations, whereas there are thousands of community health centers and other suitable places that serve as nonviolent alternatives for medical care.
You can also find here a list of where problems such as lawsuits and ambulance calls are.

Editor’s Note: This shows the fear of “overpopulation” has been around a very long time, including when the world had about 50-100 million people, a small fraction of what it has now. Overpopulation has been used as an excuse for massive abortions, but in this case, it’s used as a reason for war.
There was a time when the countless tribes of men, though wide-dispersed, oppressed the surface of the deep-bosomed earth, and Zeus saw it and had pity and in his wise heart resolved to relieve the all-nurturing earth of men by causing the great struggle of the Trojan War, that the load of death might empty the world. And so the heroes were slain in Troy, and the plan of Zeus came to pass
