Good News – Out of Jail!

In the last few minutes of his term, Joe Biden commuted the sentence of CLN endorser Leonard Peltier, the Native American activist falsely convicted in a kangaroo trial where he wasn't allowed to present exculpatory evidence of the murders of two FBI agents. He wasn't pardoned but will be able to spend the remainder of his life at home.
In the first few days of his term, Trump pardoned 23 pro-life activists who’d been aggressively prosecuted and given draconian jail sentences under the FACE Act. One of those was Herb Geraghty (pictured), with Rehumanize International, who the next day came by our table at the O’Connor conference. Having spent a year and a half in jail, it’s now a relief that Herb is free.
We have a long list of objections to both presidents, which we’ve mentioned before and will undoubtedly hold forth on for years to come. Consistent lifers are in a constant state of protesting, after all. But we want to note the bright spots.
March for Life / O’Connor Conference
As is our custom, several of us leafletted the large crowd at the March. There was a contingent that included our member groups: Rehumanize International, Democrats for Life, and the American Solidarity Party.
The following day we tabled at the Cardinal O’Connor conference at Georgetown University, where sympathy for the consistent life ethic runs high, and we were able to get out a lot of information about our programs (including our new podcast, our grassroots defunding web project, referendums web project, CL Kids, etc.).

CLN Peace Vigil in Washington, DC:
March 8. 2025
Our next peace vigil to protest nuclear weapons will be on Saturday, March 8, from 10 am to 12 pm ET. We will be on the roadway in front of the White House.
The American Solidarity Party of Maryland and DC, Pax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore, and Rehumanize International are co-sponsoring. Other groups are welcome to join us. For more information, contact John Whitehead at jwwhiteh@yahoo.com.

An Opportunity for Consistent Life Ethic Writers
Our member group Rehumanize International is looking for writers to contribute pieces on life issues and other consistent life ethic-related topics. They are interested in both short posts for their blog and longer essays for their quarterly magazine, Life Matters Journal. Payment is provided for accepted pieces. If you are interested, contact Joseph Antoniello at lmjeditor@rehumanizeintl.org.

Phillip Hicks
America: The Jesuit Review, December 18, 2024
The repeal of Roe v. Wade was both a constitutional and moral victory, but as the aftermath of that Supreme Court decision has made clear, legal restrictions on abortion divorced from a consistent life ethic make for a poor long-term political strategy. This is especially true if a candidate seems to take a pro-life stand because of political expediency rather than moral conviction.
